Osama Faiz, son of Jafrul Alam, is a visually impaired resident of Puthimari, Kochadhadhaman, Kishanganj, Bihar. His father, a small farmer with only one acre of land, struggles to provide for the 14 members of his family. Amidst this struggle, he is hesitant about his son’s education and fears that his future is bleak. This scenario is not unique to this family, as Bihar has the highest number of differently-abled individuals in India, with 10% of the national disabled population, which translates to around two million people.
As a civil society, it is our duty to be empathetic towards these pupils and take steps to help them overcome the barriers they face. We can start by providing them with the necessary tools and resources to learn, regardless of their disabilities. Fortunately, with advancements in technology, teaching such children is not a big deal. It is high time we recognize the needs of the differently-abled individuals in our society and take action to assist them. With collective efforts, we can make a difference and pave the way for a more inclusive society.
